Passing Criteria Overview

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) follows a strict yet student-friendly evaluation process for Class 10. To successfully pass the Madhyamik Pariksha in 2027, every candidate must clear a fundamental threshold in all compulsory subjects.

Grand Total Marks

Crucial Rule

The 25% passing mark is a combined total. It means you must secure at least 25 marks combining both your Written Theory exam (out of 90) and Internal Assessment (out of 10).

WBBSE 7-Point Grading Scale

The Board issues certificates and mark sheets based on a 7-point grading scale. Each grade reflects a specific range of marks obtained by the student in a particular subject.

Marks Range (Out of 100) Grade Symbol Performance / Remarks
90 to 100 AA Outstanding
80 to 89 A+ Excellent
60 to 79 A Very Good
45 to 59 B+ Good
35 to 44 B Satisfactory
25 to 34 C Marginal (Just Passed)
Below 25 D Disqualified / Failed

Note: If a student receives a 'D' grade in any compulsory subject, their overall result will be marked as 'Unsuccessful' (Failed).

Division & Star Marks Criteria

WBBSE no longer strictly prints "1st Division" or "2nd Division" on the final mark sheet, but these traditional benchmarks are still widely used by schools, parents, and higher secondary admission portals to judge a student's merit.

Category / Milestone Required Percentage Minimum Total Marks (Out of 700)
Star Marks 75% and above 525 or more
First Division 60% and above 420 to 524
Second Division 45% and above 315 to 419
Third Division (Passed) 25% and above 175 to 314
What are Letter Marks?

In Madhyamik, if a student secures 80% or above (80+ out of 100) in a particular subject, they are said to have achieved "Letter Marks" in that subject. This is denoted by the grade A+ or AA.

How to Calculate Madhyamik Percentage?

Your final percentage is calculated based on the 7 Compulsory Subjects only. The total marks evaluate to 700.

Formula:

Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained / 700) × 100
Role of Optional Elective Subjects

Some students opt for an 8th Additional/Optional subject (like IT, Mechanics, etc.). According to WBBSE guidelines:

  • The marks of the optional subject are not added to your grand total of 700.
  • It does not affect your overall percentage, Division, or Star marks.
  • However, if you fail in a compulsory subject but pass the optional subject, WBBSE does not replace the failed subject with the optional one. You must pass all 7 compulsory subjects.

What if you fail or get low marks?

If you are unhappy with your marks or if you have failed a subject marginally, WBBSE provides post-publication review options.

PPI and PPS Explained

  • PPS (Post Publication Scrutiny): Available for students who have passed but want their answer scripts re-totaled. The examiner checks if any answer was left unmarked and recounts the total.
  • PPI (Post Publication Inspection/Review): Available for students who have failed in one or more subjects. This is a more thorough re-evaluation of the answer script.

* Applications for PPS/PPI are usually accepted online through schools within 15 days of the Madhyamik Result publication. A nominal fee is charged per subject.

Frequently Asked Questions

Officially, WBBSE does not have a stated policy for "grace marks". However, during moderation, if a student is failing by just 1 or 2 marks (e.g., getting 23 or 24 instead of 25), examiners often re-evaluate the paper leniently to help the student cross the passing threshold.

No. If you are absent in any of the 7 compulsory subjects, you will automatically be marked as "Failed" (Unsuccessful) for that academic year, regardless of how well you scored in the other subjects.

Unlike CBSE, WBBSE generally does not hold compartmental exams a few months after the result. If a student fails Madhyamik, they typically have to repeat the year and appear for all subjects in the next year's board exam as a continuing/external candidate.

The highest possible score is 700 out of 700. Every year, the state toppers generally score between 690 to 694 marks (around 98.5% to 99.1%).
